Now that you've invested in your nifty new gadget – make sure you max out its potential with this guide.
Tablets have exploded on the scene since the iPad launched last year (so recently?!) but being mobile means that connecting via a 3G network is vital if you're outside a WiFi zone.
While there are a host of contract options out there, most tablet users prefer to buy data on a prepaid basis. This means there is no long-term commitment, with the flexibility to top up as they go while also not exposing themselves to the risk of out-of-bundle rates...
For hands-off and automated management of prepaid data, Flickswitch offers a service called SIMcontrol.
With the launch of the iPhone 4 & the floods of iPads coming into South Africa, there has been a huge demand for both Vodacom & MTN microsims.
I came across this very cool service the other day from the guys at Flickswitch. Basically they offer you a Pre-Paid microsim from Vodacom, which you can manage and recharge using their service called SIMcontrol, which allows you to monitor and recharge 3G data SIMs, and is ideal for iPad use.
Hein Koen of Flickswitch talks about the companies latest products as well as discusses the movements in the local data market and how this will affect consumers.
Hein is the Co-Founder of Flickswitch, a company that focusses on Mobile application development, SIM management, Mobile solutions.

The service monitors pre-paid SIM card balances, and recharges them remotely with airtime or data bundles. Described as a "contract SIM without the contract", it fills the gap between typical 24-month contracts and prepaid options...
“The flights of the 1902 glider had demonstrated the efficiency of our system for maintaining equilibrium, and also the accuracy of the laboratory work upon which the design of the glider was based. We then felt that we were prepared to calculate in advance the performance of machines with a degree of accuracy that had never been possible with the data and tables possessed by our predecessors. Before leaving camp in 1902 we were already at work on the general design of a new machine which we proposed to propel with a motor.” (Orville Wright)...

Many mobile data options becoming irrelevant or unattractive as the options for mobile data connectivity mushroom.
New players have entered the mobile connectivity market in the last few days, including Sentech (who soon self-destructed), iBurst, Neotel, Telkom and several WiFi network providers. For the truly mobile worker however, a 3G modem with a cellular operator remains the only viable option for (almost) anywhere connectivity. Used either as the main method of connecting, or as an alternative when not using corporate networks or WiFi, 3G is an invaluable service to most mobile workers...
