Are your business devices compliant for changes in USSD codes?

If your business uses SIM cards in M2M / IoT devices on one of South Africa’s mobile phone networks, there is a chance that they are using USSD codes to look up certain balance or SIM health information from the mobile network.

These USSD or short codes, however, will be replaced by new numbers when the regulator for the SA communications sector, ICASA’s Number Plan Regulations take effect on 24 March 2018. ICASA has mandated that all cellular networks standardise certain short codes.

For devices where firmware or software can not be updated to the new USSD codes this can be a major problem.

An easier way to monitor SIM balances, network status and SIM health without the need for USSD lookups is to use the SIMcontrol service from Flickswitch. This service allows you to remotely monitor and recharge large numbers of prepaid business SIM cards on a single online platform to ensure they are always active and topped up.

By using the SIMcontrol service there is no need to use USSD lookups from devices directly.

Flickswitch offers businesses and M2M/IoT providers an extensive choice of mobile connectivity options in South Africa, Namibia, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Nigeria. Because there is no one single connectivity solution that fits each of our customer’s individual needs, Flickswitch is constantly growing the choice in M2M and SIM management solutions that they can provide.
